so…last night we had this:

we have quite a few downed trees around the place…i thought for sure we would have lost some shingles or siding too, but nope…exactly 2.5 shingles found in the front yard…power went out and wasn’t restored until mid-afternoon today…some are still without power and those on the electric co-op line may not get power until monday or tuesday…

we were very lucky…another historic building in downtown hooterville is destroyed…even more sadly, it houses our radio station…lots of people around here had some serious damage…cool thing about where i live, literally everyone was out and about today lending a hand…even our neighbor kids were out on their four-wheeler checking on folks and loading and hauling branches and debris up to the dump…kids, mind you!  makes a person hopeful, it does…last night we went to the local watering hole and had some much needed cocktails by candlelight which was a new experience…but hey, might as well drink it up before it gets warm, right?

i’ll post more pics when hubbkf gets them downloaded…any suggestions on my next sweet ride?

so, this is what maeve and hubbkf do a lot of apparently while i am gone…perhaps this perpetuates maeve’s annoying habit of waking us up at 4:30 a.m. and barking until we come downstairs…just because she’s awake and bored…we usually take turns at this early morning wake-up and i will give hubbkf kudos because he takes more than i do…this morning he was up with her at 5:30…i went down at about 5:45 after he came back to bed…it makes here insanely happy to have somebody to play with…we played  a couple of rounds of ‘bite mommy’s hand!’, ‘who’s got your tail?!’ and the ever popular, never-ending all time-favorite ‘in-or-out, in-or-out’ in which she can not make up her damn mind about whether she wants to be in (‘playing bite mommy’s hand!’) or out (‘snuffle my little yellow frisbie along the ground because i don’t have opposable thumbs’)…then she took a wee little catnap but by then i was wide awake…i hate early mornings…but i did some writing, so that’s good…i have to learn how to hate early morning less and play more insanely like maeve…

first off, it’s despicable…secondly, are you a moron?  possibly a little less high-profile heist item would have been a good idea…

just goes to show that not only are people awful, they’re awfully stupid…

i call bullshit

i saw this posted on facebook…the caption says it all…total bullshit.  here’s the deal:  yes unnamed woman has the right to bear arms according to the constitution…and, as the rosa parks photo implies, all men (and chicks) are created equal.  so far so good, right?  what should make me feel so ragey then?

human dignity, that’s what.  and equating a woman shooting an ‘assault rifle’ (nice punctuation in the photo btw) at a shooting range probably for fun with rosa parks making an incredibly courageous stand, one that got her jailed and could have gotten her killed, just for having the audacity to be asked to be treated like a human being is utter and complete bullshit…

yes, the second amendment grants the freedom to bear arms…although there is a very credible argument that what that is really referring to is a standing army or a well-regulated militia.  fair enough, you say…things have changed, we’re not so worried about king george or our own fledgling government turning all tyrannical or having to literally defend our shores from foreign enemies (unless you’re a member of the wingnut party, then it’s all government tyranny and terrorists every day, all day) but, hey!  there are plenty of  bad guys out there and also, there’s some good money to be made in the manufacture and sale of weapons and ammunition…so, let’s be wishy-washy on what the 2nd amendment really means, because i loves my guns and ain’t nobody going to take them away from me…

through the years, what the second amendment means has been argued and studied and according to the supremes, it now means that it no longer pertains to a standing militia, but to individuals (prefatory statements be damned!).

so, while the declaration says that all men are created equal and have unalienable rights, the constitution is the law that makes sure those rights are continued…

not too long ago, citizens of our nation had to literally fight for those rights and freedoms…untold numbers were lynched, imprisoned or othewise treated inhumanely…just because they weren’t white…

gun owners and gun proponents have had to suffer through court cases…

hardly an equal comparison…

because gun owners or those who want to purchase firearms have to go through a little more paperwork or can’t own a certain weapon is hardly the equivalent of being made to ride in the back of the bus…or not being able to use a public restroom or waterfountain…or talk to a white woman without being assaulted…to being treated as subhuman.

and yes, i do question the need for any civilian to own an assault weapon…guns are made for one purpose:  that of killing.  the prevailing rhetoric is that citizens need to be armed to protect their property or their lives…so, clearly, your objective with owning a gun is to cause destruction.  but do you really need one that’s even more lethal?  all too often, tragedy occurs in homes with guns…or in schools.  yes, you have the right to bear arms, but our children have the right to go to school without getting shot…they have the right to live in a home where parents have enough sense to make sure that the guns aren’t accessible to them or given to them as playthings…i have  the right to expect that i can be in a public space and not get hit with gunfire…

so where does your right end and mine begin?  or vice versa?  and just because something is a right doesn’t always mean it’s a good idea…

i get that people have to right to own guns…i live with a hunter, there are guns in my house, i grew up around guns…i still don’t like them and i still think that we need to enact stricter gun regulations…and fuck all those people who whine about being ‘inconvenienced’ by stricter laws…i think the parents in newtown or columbine or cold spring or red lake  have been more than a little inconvenienced…and no, i don’t feel shameful for using the dead kid card…because that’s what it comes down to for me…go ahead, have your guns, but don’t bitch about how difficult it is to get them…they are made to kill and destroy…humans, on the other hand, are here to pursue life, liberty and happiness…and if you aren’t happy because you can’t have a deadly weapon instantaneously, well…chances are it’s only your own life, liberty and happiness you’re concerned with…how about you grow a conscience and recognize that sometimes we have to do hard things or look past our own needs for the common good…
