and then suddenly, out of nowhere…

so, our young man has been under the weather for a couple of weeks…it’s flu and all sorts of other bugs season…he’s 23, going to school, working full-time and has an active social life…so, you know…didn’t really think too much of it.  he had an appointment to see doc on monday…i was just looking forward to seeing him this weekend and couldn’t wait for him to get here…

he is badass...

he is badass…

we talked about 15 times on the phone this morning…first to tell me that he was going to urgent care because his workmates were pretty sure he had pneumonia…then a few more calls…trying to find a place…what to get his sister for her birthday…insurance questions…so, he finally gets in someplace, and i’m expecting not to hear back from him for a looooooong time…i’ve heard horror stories about the wait times…so, i was really surprised to hear back from him about an hour later…

i picked up the phone:  what did you find out?  and then i heard his shaky voice say, ‘i have type 1 diabetes…’  my mother’s heart began to ache and my arms were and still are needing to hold him…

how does this happen?  i’m having a hard time figuring this out…i mean, i’m type 2 and so his grandpa on hubbkf’s side, but type 1?  i called our doc and we talked about his symptoms and even though he was surprised, he said he’s seen this happen many times before…then i felt even crappier, because i was hoping he would laugh and say, ‘oh, that can’t be…i’ll see him on monday and we’ll figure out what’s really going on…’  his blood sugars were something like 442 so he’s staying the night while they try to get them down…

so, my boy is hours away from me and i can’t get there…he’s got jimmy at the hospital with him now, so at least he’s not bored…he is starving though…

we’ll see what tomorrow brings…it doesn’t seem right though, celebrating one’s birtday while the other one has just had his world upended…

hubbkf gets off a good one…

so, here’s a text-versation from today…

me:  i need to put a sign outside my door that tells people i have nothing to do with their hearing aid needs…

hubbkf:  what?

me:  gina the hearing aid lady is here today so i get all sorts of people popping into my office with their hearing aids…

hubbkf:  that was a joke

3 photos = supreme joy…

tonight, i am going to:

not only am i beyond excited to finally, finally see the movie, i will get my first peek inside the morris theater.  it’s pretty new…built in 1937-40 or so, but at the time it was the cat’s pajamas or some such since it was to be an

811 seat theatre building that would include three large apartments, two retail spaces, a luxurious lobby, and all the latest moviehouse features of the day.

and also, too…

The stage was large enough for vaudeville productions and dressing rooms were located in the basement. In the balcony there was a special “crying room” according to the Tribune, where “parents of fretful children might take the youngsters and still be able to see and hear the show though other patrons will be undisturbed.”

sadly, the theater struggled in later years and either closed or was on the brink of closing (i forget).   a group of people formed a co-op, raised some funds and bought the building.  renovation and preservation is in the works…wish we could have done the same for our lovely, local orpheum theater
